(words and music by Greg Graffin)
Against the Grain is the fifth album (and seventh release overall) by punk rock band Bad Religion released on November 23, 1990.[1] This is the last album recorded with drummer Pete Finestone who left in 1991 to concentrate with The Fishermen and was replaced by the next drummer Bobby Schayer shortly before their 6th release, Generator.
Along with the last two albums (1988’s Suffer and 1989’s No Control), Against the Grain is considered by many to be the band’s greatest album, and it contains many songs that are constantly cited as the band’s best, including “21st Century (Digital Boy)”, “Anesthesia,” “Walk Away,” and “Modern Man.”[citation needed] More than just an influentual album, Against The Grain gave many punk fans and many punk bands hope for the survival of punk in the 90s.
Like Bad Religion’s albums up to Generator, Against the Grain was remastered on April 6, 2004. The 1990 original version is now out of print.
Against the Grain also marks the 10th anniversary of Bad Religion playing together after their formation.
Some parts by G. Graffin from the book ‘is belief in God, good, bad or irrelevant?
‘Human knowledge is created by a collective of workers in all sorts of fields. Neurobiology is one of the newer fields of inquiry. When we add the data to the wealth of data from psychology, evolutionary biology, molecular biology, medicine, etc. we are one step closer to answering the mystery of human life.’
Greg Graffin; ‘The intolerance of the Inquisition is, I believe, a natural outcome of traditional theology. History is the result of causes. Although we probably can’t always figure out exactly what caused certain things to happen in history, we can examine some of the dominating factors’
‘Did you know that my great grand-father, E.M. Zerr, wrote a multi-volume Bible commentary in the 1930s that is still in use in rural areas of the Midwest in a sect called Church of Christ?’
‘It seems that most people want to believe there is more meaning in the universe than actually exists. There is strong emotional drive to find meaning, wich may be “hard-wired” in our brains or a cultural universal found in all human societies perhaps. The drive leads many people to accept religion readily because theologies reassure us that indeed there is an ultimate meaning and an ultimate purpose to human life’.
‘My religion, wich is of course as yet undefined and totally unpopular, accepts morality as a set of prescribed rules that came not from an supernatural being and his mysterious wisdom, but rather came from a recognition of human behavior. We humans can recognize our own behavior and we can codify it. We are smart beings who can characterize good and bad behavior and relate it to how it makes us feel(good or bad).’
‘The facts of naturalism are too powerful for people to ignore, but they haven’t had time, or haven’t had the need to think deeply about how that conflicts with the tenets and implications of traditional theology’

it just seemsby …
it just seemsby what you said you have to either choose between religion or science. Really, i dont think this has to be the case. personally, im what you would call a middle of the roader- religion is NEEDED in life, or was… but i can rant about that for hours… what i was getting at is that you can believe both in a God and in evolution;
ie, evolution applies but was designed by Him, and was started by him…. thats what i meant

It’s threw this …
It’s threw this song I questioned why I went to church when I was a christian. The people at my church were like why do you listion to TooL there not christian. I relised the part of the song ” and have they told you how to think, clensed your mind of sepesis and autonomy”. It was that and I reslised that creatioism dose not explain how biology works. Evolution has more insite on how biology works.

Love this song. Every casual BR fan is all about “Do What you Want.” I just think this has a more thoughtful message on the subject.

Your statement was …
Your statement was ad hominem based on the fact that you didn’t address my issue, but rather make the ertion that I’m a “baby killer.” You also contradict yourself, first you say that “no-one is fitting god into a box” then, you follow it up with the study if god us merely “one’s perception (of god).” If claiming your own perception of an imaginary being as truth ISN’T fitting it into a box, then I’m not entirely sure how else to describe it.. You reacted without thinking… Go figure

Just because there …
Just because there is a high concentration of idiots in one place(”priesthood school”) does not make it anymore difficult to defend rational argument.

Nothing I said was …
Nothing I said was “ad-hominem,” look it up. You say I believe in God because I have an imaginary friend and you think THAT isn’t ad-hominem? Truly bizarre indeed
You should browse YouTube with a little more discrimination before you quote various videos that may or may not be founded with rational arguments :]

You made a bizarre …
You made a bizarre statement based on irrational reasoning, I just did the same.
Your original argument doesn’t even fundamentally make sense. No-one is “fitting God into a box to suit their argument,” I am discussing theology — that is, not necessarily the factual nature of God but one’s perception thereof. So get the over it, go to a priesthood school and tell them they all are there because they have imaginary friends, good luck

Could God make a burrito so hot that he himself could not eat it?

Red herring, ad …
Red herring, ad hominem, pointless. I provided reasons for my conclusion based on perspective, perception and logical connection. You simply made an accusation based on nothing and with no more intent than an insult. No, I don’t see the connection, please, enlighten me. I’d love to see a logical connection between the lack of belief in a god and the killing of an infant. Whereas the connection between an imaginary god and an imaginary is plain for all to see, murder and atheism don’t connect…
June 11th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
Yes the study of …
Yes the study of theology is much like having an invisible friend. And atheism is like murdering babies. See the connection?

“Imperfect lives” …
“Imperfect lives” is a popular fallacy for god’s existance. As is “we all have the capacity to believe in god, therefore it must exist.” A question for you, “god’s ways are so mysterious and so high that we could never comprehend them,” followed by an explaination of what happened and what his intentions are/were. First he’s indescribable and unbound by science, now he’s easily fit into your box to suit your argument… Almost like an imaginary friend. See the connection?

And they took the ” …
And they took the “snake”’s word over God’s word… they were given a perfect world and the freedom of choice, but they blew it. The “snake” told them to indulge because God wouldn’t find out… he told them to try and trick God, that is a conscious sin

yeah but i dont see how it was even their fault since they were decieved by a snake (not satan) and adam didnt even know it was a evil fruit
June 11th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
Well, I understand …
Well, I understand what you mean, and while perhaps not to that degree bad things happen to all of us. However, the concept that death and suffering suggests a Godless existence is a popular fallacy… To put it very simply, Earth is not a perfect place. Ever since the first sin (Adam and Eve) it was meant to be imperfect. Remember, this is life — not heaven.. If our lives were perfect and there was no suffering, why would any of us strive for heaven..?

well i think there is no ‘proof’ of god i mean if god the bible had a prediction that came true (and i mean like it was dead set like the day and what not and not something that could be orchestrated by humans) i would convert
