in the 70s they actually had the balls to use realistic criminals. if we lived in the movies of today, every president and doctor would be black and only whites did crimes.

Not only witty and entertaining scene, but a great way to tell about the character. Has anyone noticed he doesn’t even laugh or smile in the whole movie except for in this scene? It shows he isn’t actually very far from being a bad guy. There’s a little psycho in him too, since the only thing he enjoys - playing with a crook’s life.

Dirty Harry is the prototype ‘does what he wants’ badass cop, and this is one of the prototype killer cop film shootouts.
Harry’s respectful and protective of innocent, decent, honest, loyal people - and complete ice cold badass to punks, thugs and killers.
And who the else handles a 44 Magnum with ONE hand (as he does once here, and many other times) and such deadly precision!?
Nobody couldve made Dirty Harry what Clint Eastwood made him.

easily one of the …
easily one of the top five movie scenes but the sad fact is, and especially in sanfran, because harry merely says “halt” instead of “police halt” his would have been brought up on murder charges and because he’s a white cop he’d have gotten hate crime charges had this happened now So the next scene would be harry on his way to the chair with Al Sharpton screeching about scoring a victory. the fact is Harry DID screw this up!
