On the edge of the 30th anniversary of punk rock, Punk's Not Dead takes you into the sweaty underground clubs, backyard parties, recording studios, and yes, shopping malls and stadium shows where punk rock music and culture continue to thrive. Thirty years after bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols infamously shocked the system with their hard, fast, status-quo-killing rock, the longest-running punk band in history is drawing bigger crowds than ever, "pop-punk" bands have found success on MTV, and kids too young to drive are forming bands that carry the torch for punk's raw, immediate sound. Meanwhile, "punk" has become a marketing concept to sell everything from cars to vodka, and dyed hair and piercings mark a rite of passage for thousands of kids. Can the true, nonconformist punk spirit still exist in today's corporatized culture? Featuring interviews, performances, and behind-the-scenes journeys with the bands, labels, fans, and press who keep punk alive, Punk's Not Dead dares to juxtapose pop-punk's music and lifestyle against the roots in the 70s and 80s, resulting in unexpected revelations.
A DIY search for the soul of a subculture and a celebration of all things loud, fast, and spiked, Punk's Not Dead shows punk is stronger and more relevant today than it's ever been.
Live performances, interviews and antics from: 36 Daggers, 999, The Adicts, Alkaline Trio, Anti-Flag, Angelic Upstarts, The Anti-Nowhere League, The Ataris, The Bad Brains, Bad Religion, The Bags, Bang Sugar Bang, Squad, Jello Biafra, Billyclub, Black Flag, Black Market Baby, The Briefs, The Business, Buzzcocks, The Casualties, Channel 3, Circle Jerks, The Clash, sparrer, The Cramps, Culpables, The ed, Dead Kennedys, DEK, Desa, DI, The Diffs, Discharge, Division of Laura Lee, DOA, Dropkick Murphys, The Exploited, Fallopian, Flipper, The Forgotten, Funeral Dress, Fugazi, Generation X, GBH, The Germs, The God Awfuls, Good Charlotte, Green Day, Billy Idol, Iggy Pop, The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Iron Cross, Juliette and the Licks, L7, Malas Cartas, MC5, Minor Threat, Mordingjarnir, My Chemical Romance, Naked Agression, Narcoleptic Youth, NOFX, The Offspring, Once and Again, Operation Ivy, Orange, Pennywise, Peter and the Test Tube Babies, Plan B, Pogo Atak, Punk Rock Objects, The Rabble, The Ramones, Rancid, Rasputin, Rocket Rockers, Henry Rollins, Scream, Sex Pistols, Sham 69, Side Effect, Simple Plan, The Skulls, The Slits, T.V. Punk rock is a rock …
Punk rock is a rock music genre that developed between 1974 and 1976 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Rooted in garage rock and other forms of what is now known as protopunk music, punk rock bands eschewed the perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s rock. They created fast, hard-edged music, typically with short songs, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics.
