REM mark the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, “Radio Free Europe,” was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the US during the early ’80s, REM brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a DIY aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional …

I suspect …
I suspect DoroteoVilla to be stuck in the 80’s, just like me. I agree wholeheartedly and unreservedly…Document was the end of greatness for the nice boys from Athens, with Automatic… a tolerable listen, but only just barely. After A.F.T.P., the wheels fell off and stayed off. Some garage bands should never even start down the driveway. Long live Lifes Rich Pageant!

So when today when …
So when today when a band like “TV on the Radio” or “Kings of Leon” are hailed as the best band in america, these guys right here were that. And as with great bands, they unltimately decline. They went from this sharp and true sound to a ing pompous, righteous windbaggy screed of a sound that may as well be playing in Vegas. Oh well. We all get old, right?

IRS years R.E.M. …
IRS years R.E.M. are one of the best bands of all time at their peak. “So. Central Rain” sounds timeless, like the rest of Reckoning.

I love this song so …
I love this song so much. This band is in my top 10 list of all time. Even when I can’t hear all his garbled lyrics, Michael Stipe’s voice conveys the pain, enjoyment, pathos and mystery of what it’s like to live on this planet. Love and sadness are so close they should be the same word.
