Van Halen’s Atomic Punk - The Lesson!!:
This video will provide you with complete step by step instructions on how to play the solo in Atomic Punk. Eddie plays in E minor (E blues) and uses the 1974 Phase 90 during the entire solo. There are some fun runs in this song along with the palm scratching. Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t click right away. As long as you understand the concepts, you’re fine
If you’re copying Ed, then your tone is very important. I’m using my old 100watt, JCM800 Marshall head with a single 4 speaker celestion cabinet with the back off of it so the sound comes out the back of the cab as well. The head has old GE 6550s for the power tubes, a double slap back Boss delay (Eddie uses a single slap back delay) and a 500ms reverb (Microverb and my best guess). It’s cheap stuff but it’s the tube amp that gives me the sound.
***** For this solo I added Dunlop’s MXR Phase 90, the one with the script writing, not the block lettering. The script one is more closely related to the 1974 box that Ed used on the first album.
This video was shot in high def, 1920×1080i, and it looks unbelievable. YouTube will allow me to upload HD at 1280 by 720, the there is a little loss in the quality.
I hope you have fun with this.

The Paul pickups …
The Paul pickups are great. All of the natural harmonics are great, pinch harmonics are great, but some of the other ‘false’ harmonics don’t want to come through for me. I don’t really know why they don’t ring.

I’ll tell you a …
I’ll tell you a good VH tune to here a flanger…the end of Loss Of Control from Women and Children First. That last chord Ed hits, then he cranks the Resonence and it starts to feed back on him…very, very cool.

They’re basically …
They’re basically the same effect. A phaser is a single wave with a peak and valley. A flanger is a single wave that is replicated and then ‘flanged’ together to create a deeper, more intense sweep.
The beginning of “And The Cradle Will Rock” or “Unchained” is a flanger because it’s too intense and drastic to be the Phase 90.
If you listen to “Eruption” or the “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love” solo or the “Ice Cream Man” solo, that’s the Phase 90, the sweep is much less drastic.

Not so much bands …
Not so much bands as guitar players. Plus, I want to get some good theory up there…not the boring garbage but the real good stuff that we all need to know. But I’m going to show you the tricks that make it easy. It’s the stuff nobody ever talks about. =)
I dont’ have a lot of time to do this, but I’m trying to get good stuff up as often as possible.

Of all the tunes …
Of all the tunes you could select…LOL! Unless you have a Steinberg key transposing/selecting tremelo system thingy…you have to fake it and that’s no fun!
It’s actually one of the cooler Sammy era tunes, along with Finish What You Started.
I hadn’t planned on any Sammy era stuff, so it would be in the future sometime.
Sorry…
